Palangkaraya, C Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Muslim Students Action Front (KAMMI)- Central Kalimantan Chapter has demanded court trials for those involved in the Bank Century bailout scandal.

Chairman of KAMM`s Kalimantan chapter, Gunawan, said here Tuesday the efforts to reveal the bailout scandal should not just end with the work of the House of Representatives` (DPR) inquiry committee.

"Instead, the outcome of the House`s Bank Century Inquiry Committee`s probe should be followed up by a legal process for the sake of justice for the Indonesian people," he said.

In Jakarta, the House`s plenary session on the Bank Century bailout scandal ended in chaos on Tuesday after its speaker, Marzuki Alie, lost control over attending legislators` interruptions.

In the Bank Century bailout case, Gunawan said his organization urged President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to remain consistent and meet his pledges to fight corruption at any cost.

Therefore, he asked President Yudhoyono who had admitted his responsiblity for the Bank Century bailout policy to put the nation`s interest above personal and political party interests.

Gunawan said most of the party factions in the House`s Bank Century Inquiry Committee had concluded that there were problems in the government`s bailout policy.

"We demand that all of the party factions remain consistent and firm with their findings. Don`t betray the people."

"It is time for our legislators to show us that they are really the people`s representatives and a watchdog over the government," he said.

Over the past two months, the central government had come under sharp public ridicule over its decision to rescue failed Bank Century with a total of Rp6.7 trillion in bailout funds.

Vice President Boediono, a former Bank Indonesia (BI) governor, and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani were among those named by several party factions in the House`s Bank Century Inquiry Committee as responsible for the Bank Century scandal.

Among the factions that had mentioned Boediono, Sri Mulyani, and other government officials were the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP), the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), and Golkar Party.

The inquiry committee`s final views were delivered by all party factions at the DPR`s plenary session on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Following the presentation of some of party factions` stances, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani defended the government`s bailout of Bank Century.

Speaking before invited bankers in Jakarta on Monday, she said the bailout was justified based on credible reasons and had been prudently decided in response to the global economic crisis.

Accompanying President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the meeting, Sri Mulyani said, since the beginning, the head of state had confirmed that the government`s decision about the troubled bank was "right".

In the dialogue, the invited bankers said the government`s decision to rescue Bank Century amid last year`s global crisis was a "correct policy" to save the country`s financial sector.(*)
